What makes Jamie special?

Originally from New Jersey, Jamie has been practicing in New Jersey and South Carolina for the past two years but has recently moved to the Lancaster area.  After graduating from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania she was unsure of what setting and patient population she was destined to work in. Her instincts led her to Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, NJ which held a special place in her heart as they helped rehabilitate her grandmother after a stroke.

At Kessler, she was able to grow her neurological skills with a large interdisciplinary team while treating patients with acute and chronic neurological conditions. There, she got to implement newly developed skills for improving function, quality of life, and education for patients and their families. She grew a strong interest in the educational component that comes along with treating neurological conditions including patients and their families/caregivers on pathology, course of treatment, rehabilitation goals, and family/caregiver training.

Jamie played soccer throughout her undergraduate years at the University of Scranton and later coached the team during her physical therapy studies.

Want to know more?  Here’s a little Q & A…

What’s something that has surprised you about your chosen career path?

I grew up playing sports and played soccer throughout college and always thought I wanted to be a sports PT. It wasn’t until later in PT school that I learned more about neurological disorders and luckily I had the opportunity to become a neuro-trained physical therapist early on in my career!

What’s the one thing you wish you’d known when you began working as a PT/PTA?

You will truly learn something new every single day. Different patients, different clinics, different co-workers will each teach you something that you didn’t know before and it’s up to you to utilize that to your advantage to become a better clinician.

What energizes you at work?

Seeing patients and their families pleased with the goals they’ve met since their start of care. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a patient’s family member or significant other thrilled with a patient’s newly gained independence in a task or ability to take more steps than before PT. It keeps me wanting to learn more, so I can help more people.

Most important advice you give your patients?

Just try your best! It doesn’t have to be perfect, but put in the effort and you will get the results! Keep yourself moving – movement is medicine!

What is one thing that instantly makes your day better?

Sunshine and a good cup of coffee! I love when the sun is shining, and the weather is nice 😊

Where would you be right now if you had zero obligations and money didn’t matter?

I would love to help rescue dogs and other animals from harm and help care for them to find new permanent homes. I grew up with dogs in the family and continue to have a passion for helping them and providing the help that I can!

Is there any experience you think everyone should be required to have? What is it?

Moving away from home – whether it’s only a few months or for school. I think it’s important to realize what “home” is for you, things you may have taken for granted, and how your friends and family have such an impact on your life.

What are you passionate about?

Tradition & family. I love getting together for the holidays with my family, creating traditions with friends, and the excitement that leads up to re-visiting old traditions.

What’s your favorite place locally?

Any farmer’s market with local goods! I love supporting local businesses and farmers! I enjoy utilizing what our community has to offer!

Do you have any pets?

We have one dog, named Loki! He’s an 8-year-old Siberian Huskey who loves being outside in the cold. He loves playing with our other friends/family member’s dogs!

What’s your favorite tradition (holiday or otherwise?)

Making Christmas cookies with my family on the weekend leading up to Christmas! It’s been a tradition with my Grandmother ever since I can remember!

Favorite Sport to watch?  Who’s your team?

Football – NY Giants (New Jersey is home for me! I know they’re not good, but I can’t give up on them now!)

What’s one item you can’t leave home without?

Chapstick & a water bottle!

How do you like to start or end your day?

A cup of coffee in the morning & tea with honey before bed! It helps relax me 😊
